I first met Christian 11 yrs and Nathan 8 at Burleigh Heads with his infamous and awesome parents Herbie and Dibbie Fletcher, here for the iconic Stubbies Surf Classic in 1982. I made these original "super groms" some boards here and there...By the late 80's Christian was blowing up in California riding a few of my boards, whilst riding for the likes of master shapers Chris McElroy (R.I.P) and Timmy Patterson.
I am told that a number of well-known shapers in California liked the "NEV's from Burleigh" they saw Christian going mental on at Trestles. To have Christian ripping so bloody hard and so high in the US (the commercial heart of surfing) was an awesome leg up for my career. This exposure ultimately resulted in NEV Future Shapes being the first surfboard company in Australia to export finished boards to the USA, Europe, Japan, and Brazil throughout the 90's.
The innovative metal-loving goofy-footer from San Clemente, California is an icon in both aerial surfing and surf-rebel extremism. Surf writer Matt George noted. "Anytime Christian Fletcher shows up, an ordinary day suddenly ends."
It had a generous helping of volume in the nose and low, soft rails that concluded in a flyer swallow tail. There was also a vee concave through the tail to help with lift and squirt off the bottom. From my first wave it was evident that this board had no issues generating speed.
